Our last excursion in the Peruvian highlands was to see Rainbow Mountain, before heading to the rainforest. This meant that we had to be up and ready by 4am, as it was a 3.5hr drive to the base of the mountain! Most of us tried to sleep in the car, catching up as much as possible on our sleep.
As it was an early start, and due to the high altitude, we decided that the sensible thing to do would be to hire some horses for the first part of the ascent. It turned out to be a very smart choice, as it conserved our energy for the really steep ascent at the very end.
But it was worth it going to the very top view point as the view from there was spectacular, at 5036m above sea level. Even though it was cloudy at that stage the mountain was very impressive with its range of colours. Maybe not quite the full range of the rainbow colours but still very colourful.
After enjoying the view, we descended down the mountain all the way back to the base site. No horses on the way back. Luckily we made great progress going down, and before we knew it we were back in the car and heading slowly back to Cusco. There we just relaxed and took it a bit slow as we were exhausted by our very early start and high altitude hiking workout!
