Brazil - Itacimirin

Our last day in Brazil and of our South American adventure was spent in a resort hotel in Itacimirin, just outside of Salvador.  Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, with apparently the largest African disporia outside of Africa.  Unfortunately, they were all slaves taken from the Portuguese colonies as the local natives refused to be taken as slaves (either died fighting or committed suicide).  As there were not enough females in the colonies the Portuguese men would sleep with their favourite female slaves.  And interestingly, when a child was then born, they would be baptised and hence registered as a free men, but their mothers continued to be enslaved.  Combined with this, the Portuguese kidnapped some of the native children (children were easier to “train” to be slaves), it explains why Salvador has such a diverse genetic heritage.

Whilst in Itacimirin, we basically did nothing, apart from some school work, lots of swimming (in rain and sunshine) and enjoying caipirinhas.  We even took a course in making caipirinhas.  The girls are now qualified to make them for the parents!

As our resort was right on the beach, we dipped our feet into the warm Atlantic Ocean and had a lovely walk up and down the beach.  Soaking in the sun rays whilst we could before returning to the UK

Alas, so ends our grand adventure, after 2 flights and one train ride back home.  We now need to slowly get back to real life and find our new routine.  But not to worry, the travel bug as bitten us all hard and we will still be travelling whenever we can, and of course sharing it as we go along.

Till the next adventure!  Adeus (Goodbye in Portuguese)!
