Europe - Verona

The sun came out as we left Milan, and turned into a beautiful day.  Making the most of it, we visited the little village of Sirmione on Lake Garda. We drove as far as we could, and then crossed a little draw bridge into the old village centre.  It’s a gorgeous little village tucked away from the rest of the world, surrounded on 3 sides by the lake.  And if you look at it on a map, it looks like a needle going into the lake.

We spent the afternoon exploring the Sirmione, and walking along the shore line.  There was even a gorgeous designated “Kissing” area.  Kisses were given!  After an Italian lunch, the sun made us want a gelato and we found a place serving them.  What we did not know was the size of scoops!  One scoop was equivalent of at least 3 if not 4 scoops we are used to…  Sadly none of us could manage to finish our ice creams!

Eventually we made it to Verona and checking into our accommodation.  As we were still feeling full from lunch and the Gelato, we decided to have a light dinner.  Robyn found a “Flat/Pancake” lettuce, and had the great idea of making a salad pizza.  It was yum!

Our one full day in Verona, marked Harriette’s 10th Birthday!  Hard to believe that our “little” daughter is already 10 years old!!!  We celebrated the day with some presents and a massive breakfast of French toast, strawberries and whipped cream (from a can!), before heading out into Verona on a scavenger hunt. It was a great way to explore the town of Verona and hit all the key highlights, such as the Arena, the various Piazzas, Ponte Pietra, the Cathedral, the Basilica and of course Juliet’s house and balcony!

The only downer was that it rained almost consistently through most of the day.  All of us, plus the dogs got quite wet. We were however able to dry off during a delicious lunch in one of the restaurant on Piazza dells Erbe.  The restaurant also learnt of Harriette’s Birthday and treated us to a traditional “Chocolate salami”. Best way to describe is that it a salami shaped cake that is a combination of shortbread and truffle chocolate.  It was AMAZING!

After walking our feet off, we returned home and made dinner.  But before we got home we stopped at a confectionery, and had Harriette pick out her cake.  She choose the “ROMEO” cake that turned out to be amazing with a white and dark chocolate mousse on a crunchy brittle base.

Harriette’s birthday definitely turned out to be a very “sweet” day in the end.
