Europe - Prague

It was a bit of a hop from Vienna to Prague, and after having a bit of a nightmare of figuring out parking we settled into our tiny little apartment.

We got to do some really cool things in Prague. It started by taking the girls to the Opera! We treated them to Hansel and Gretel, or at least an adaptation of the classical story to a 2 hr Opera version.  The girls absolutely loved it, with the singing, dancing and puppets.  The only issue, as that we felt very underdressed as all the locals came very smartly dressed in fancy dresses, suits and ties (even a few bow ties).

The next stop was a day at the Castle, and we got lucky with the beautiful sun shining all day for us.  Unfortunately the dogs were not allowed in the castle parts so Robyn volunteered to sit in the sun with them.  Mish took the girls through the old state rooms, the little St. George's Basilica, and the Golden Lane. The golden lane was definitely a hit with various old houses (the seamstress's house was the girls' favourite), the torture chamber and the armoury.

Unfortunately we did not get in to see the Cathedral, as the line of tourists was absolutely insane.  Actually overall the number of tourists in Prague is uncomfortably massive.  The Christmas markets looked like a lot of fun, but there were such huge crowds it was very difficult to move through the markets and the old town in general.  We did find a couple of Christmas markets that were outside the old town,  that were a lot better and more authentic.

Of course we also walked over the Charles bridge, with all the statue and art performers on it.  The bridge construction started in 1357 and took 45 years.  Interesting enough the 30 statues were only added much later in around 1700.  Our walk of the old town also took us see the Astronomical Clock, built in 1410, which is the oldest such clock still in operation (3rd oldest overall).  We even managed to time it perfectly to see it ring at the full hour.

As we got our fill of the old town, with the old squares, we decided to do something different and went to the Museum of Illusions.  It may be a small museum, but we had a TON of fun and giggles.  The girls were very interested to see how the illusions work and see how far back some of the illusions went.

To finish off our stay in Prague, Robyn organised a "medieval" dinner show for us in a cellar restaurant.  There were jugglers, fire breathers, belly dancers, acrobats and even pirates (how medieval…), to go with our delicious dinner.  It was a great way to end our few days in Prague
