Europe - Heidelberg

Arrived in Germany and staying in a little village outside of Heidelberg.  Harriette has written us a lovely poem; Heidelberg, Spidelberg.

Heidelberg is a town on the Neckar River in southwestern Germany. It’s known for venerable Heidelberg University, founded in the 14th century. Gothic Heiliggeistkirche church towers over the cafe-lined Marktplatz, a town square in the Altstadt (Old Town). The red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a noted example of Renaissance architecture, stand on Königstuhl hill.

We took the Funicular up to the Castle and checked that out, including the fascinating Deutsches Apotheken Museum -   Located within the old castle. The museum exhibits on the last 2000 years of medical science & pharmacy, including glass apothecary flasks.

Within the castle itself there is the GREAT Heidelberg Tun Großes Fass) - it’s an extremely large wine vat contained within the cellars of the castle. There have been four such barrels in the history of Heidelberg. In 1751, the year of its construction, the present one had a capacity of 221,726 litres (that is a lot of wine bottles!). One hundred and thirty oak trees were reputedly used in its construction. It has only rarely been used as a wine barrel, and in fact presently enjoys more use as a tourist attraction, and also as a dance floor since one was constructed on top of the tun.

We also wondered around the old town, window shopping and taking in the pretty sights including the Alte Brucke (The old bridge) and walk along the river. Found a few geocaches and had a thoroughly relating day outside with the girls.

We finished off the visit by venturing to Märchenparadies, on the top of the hill overlooking the town of Heidelberg, we went on a little train ride through the miniature village and walked a muddy trail through the woods, but the view was totally worth it!
