Madagascar - 6, 7 & 8 September 2023

6 September

A relaxing day!  All we did was swim in the ocean, in the pool, read on the outside beds and take a walk along the beach.

It’s important to have rest periods from time to time!

7 September

Exciting start this morning, and an early one as well.  We had a sailing adventure departure at 6:30 for some whale spotting.    A traditional Madagascan boat was waiting on the beach for us, which is basically a hollowed out canoe with a side runner. Two local “sailors” first paddled along the coast until we rounded a corner and hoisted up the sail.

The sailing rig is very interesting as it looks to be a combination of a square canvas in a combined sprint rig and lateen rig.  Mish was having a blast with the sailing setup, and was very impressed by the speed the boat was going at.

The boat took us all they way to coral reef and beyond as that is where the whales normally are.  And it’s there that we quickly found a pod of humpback whales swimming around.  They were so majestic and we could not get enough of them.  They eventually said goodbye with a wave of their tales.

On the way back, Mish got a bit of a treat as he got to help ballast the boat. And we raced back to shore.  We discovered that Harriette takes after Mish, with his joy of sailing.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing and milling around the beach.  The girls spent HOURS in the water swimming!

8 September

Another lazy day on the beach with lots of swimming and walks. For lunch we walked through the town on a mission to get all the ingredients to make sandwiches.  While we did not find all the items we wanted, we were still successful in making a yummy lunch.  We got onions, tomatoes, roasted sweet potato, green mango and some deep fried cassava balls.  The hardest item to source was some bread.  In the end the only thing we could find were these mini (finger) baguettes.

The highlight of the day as taking the girls paddle boarding in the afternoon.  Originally we thought that we would just paddle along the coast, but the girls really wanted to learn how to do it, so we spent a lot of time practicing standing on the board and figuring out how to paddle whilst standing on a slightly choppy sea.  They both did great, and were quite independent near the end. It was especially challenging since the boards had a few micro-leaks in them…
