Once we were up and fed, we hopped into the car and took off along the coast road to the end of Africa. We soon discovered that that today is a public holiday, Woman’s Day, and that meant that there were a LOT of people going to the beaches and costal towns. There was a real lively vibe as we drove along.
Eventually, after a gorgeous drive and a few pit stops to see either some amazing landscapes, baboons or ostriches, we arrived at the Cape of Good Hope, formerly known as Cape of Storms. There we took our mandatory picture with the sign, and then hiked up the mountain to get a better view. And it was amazing! You could see for miles out to sea. We spent some time sitting on the beach, listening to the waves crash against the rocks and watching the birds fly centimetres above the water. It is easy to imagine how difficult it was back in the old days to navigate these waters, especially seeing huge waves crashing into something some distant off the coast.
After enjoying a cold pizza on the beach for lunch, we slowly headed back towards Muzienberg. Along the way we stopped at Simon’s Town, and failed miserably to either find a cafe to have some cake and tea or even ice cream. Either they were closed or simply ran out of things to sell. We think all businesses grossly underestimated the volume of business today being a public holiday.
We finished today’s trip on the beach at Muzienberg, with the girls having a blast building a sand model of an ant. It was really very well done. It was a bit disheartening to see the famous Muzienberg colourful beach huts to have fallen into a state of disrepair.
Finally it was time for dinner and we decided that we had to go to the Brass Bell for their famous mussels. Robyn took Mish the last time they were in Cape Town (roughly 12 years ago). But after sitting down, and ordering our food, we were told that they were sold out of mussels! Disappointed we ordered burgers instead, we were then told that they also were out of burgers. It seems that most of the menu was not available… What a FAIL! We paid for drinks and moved on…
Luckily we passed some other restaurants and found a place that served mussels! But they had run out of bread to go with the mussels and they also were completely out of all condiments! At least we got our yummy mussels.
We are starting to get worried with the trend of our picks of restaurants in Cape Town! Hopefully tomorrow will be better as we are aiming to have sushi for lunch tomorrow!
