South Africa - 18 August 2023

Early start this morning to catch the flight back to Johannesburg.  It was basically the first flight out of George.  Uneventful until it came to picking up our rental car.  It started with waiting a LONG time to get served, and then extra paperwork (more than the previous 2 rentals on this leg of the adventure) before we eventually got to the car.  We did the usual walk around the car inspection, packed it up and got settled, when we then realised that the car does not have a full tank of fuel! That lead to unpacking the car and doing it all again for another car.  It took us nearly 1.5hr to get the car and finally drive out of the car park.

Once we were free of the airport, we headed north to the Dinokeng Game reserve to meet up with Wawa and Da.  They were waiting for us with open arms and cold drinks.  But before we got to the game reserve, we had to stop at the stores and pick up some cake (actually 2 cakes) and champagne for some celebration fun…

We eventually settled down in the reserve accommodation, we got a whole house to ourselves.  And spent the afternoon just relaxing by the pool and playing games with the kids. We are awaiting the arrival of Robyn’s godparents for dinner and the weekend.

Once everyone arrived and got settled in, we just sat around and talked and talked and talked.  At one point we got the Braai going and Mish took over as Braai Master.  Under Wawa’s excellent supervision, he cooked up chicken thighs, kudo and oryx steaks.  Robyn and the girls made a huge salad.  The food quickly disappeared along with a few bottles of good old South African wine.

A real trip down memory lane, and lots of “remember when…” but such a good evening with great food, great wine and great company!
