Madagascar - 31 August 2023

After a good night’s sleep we met up with a local tour guide and we headed into the rainforest (Ranomafana National Park), on the hunt of some lemurs!

It was a proper jungle trek, going up the hillsides, along very narrow trails.  Not to mention very muddy and slippery trails.  Our guide also had 2 spotters, who ran ahead to try to find the lemurs.  The first group they found simply outpaced us and we just could not catch up with them!

But eventually we started to find them and we found quite a few different species:

  • Red-fronted Brown Lemur
  • Black and White Ruffed Lemur
  • Grey Bamboo Lemur
  • Golden Bamboo Lemur
  • Greater Bamboo Lemur
  • Milne-Edward’s Sifaka

The spotters also found:

  • A leaf shaped frog, which we completely missed as it was perfectly camouflaged
  • A leaf gecko
  • A freshwater crawfish with a crab friend.  The crawfish was not happy and very snappy with its claws
  • A forest snake. The girls remarked how very cold the snake was when we touched its belly.

After around 8km hiking in the jungle we returned to the town and went hunting for some food.  We settled on the “restaurant du village”, a very basic establishment.  There we made ourselves comfortable after ordering a selection from their menu, and watched the village life whilst we waited.  The best “show” was when one of the “mini-buses” would arrive and we would try to count how many people were in the actual bus.  It was difficult as they were so crammed with people!  We saw one, which we thought was full, have another 8 people jam themselves into the already full bus as it pulled away.

In the evening we had a night tour to look for the nocturnal animals.  We found LOTS of tiny geckos and chameleon!  Well we did not, but our tour guide did.  She was an amazing spotter! She even managed to find a mouse lemur.  The girls both agreed that it was very cute!

It was a great day, after a whole day in the car yesterday!
