Scotland - Arrival

09 June

Off to Scotland we go.  But first we are going to take a detour and visit our friends in the lovely Yorkshire dales.  Hence as soon as we packed the car we headed off.  the GPS took us through the back roads of Wales, which were gorgeous but windy and relatively slow.  But then we hit the M6, on a Friday afternoon… eventually we get to Foxup in the Yorkshire dales.

The first night we are staying with Rachel, and the girls have a blast with her and help with a number of farm chores. these included feeding the lambs, milking the cows, shoveling the poo… well not the last one…

Whilst the girls were busy, Robyn made boboetie for dinner.  Our friends Amelia and Ed, who live down the road, came up for dinner and drinks.  The food was delicious, drinks exquisite and company fabulous!  It turned out to be fun little party, ending at 1:30 am and a tub of ice cream drowned in alcohol.

The kids of course punished us by getting up at their usual early morning and demanding food and attention! We are so used to getting in 7hr of instead of just 5 ish hours…. Anyway the girls helped Rachael again with the farm chores and after a yummy fried breakfast, we packed up and journeyed long and far to Amelia’s farmhouse.  The girls actually cycled down the road to Amelia’s and Mish brought down the car.

After getting some schooling done, when the girls were asked what they wanted to cook for dinner with Amelia, the answer was obviously: PASTA!  So while the girls had a expert lesson of making 3 types of pasta with Amelia, the parents took the time to do some travel prep for both Scotland and the following adventures.

Once cooking school was done, we took the children and the fur children on a walk.  As the weather was so warm, it was thought that going to the stream would be a great way to keep cool.  Unfortunately we forgot how much Duke loves the water, to the point that it’s an obsession for him.  As soon as he heard the water flowing we was there in a flash and nothing else mattered.  While he had a blast and drank half the stream, we had to move on as we could not spend the rest of the adventure there.  Instead, we were taken through a few fields that were sown with wild flowers.  Maxine found (with Ed’s help) that she could use her hat as a frisbee, and so became a game for her and Ed.

The walk definitely made us hungry and thus we really tucked into the pasta dishes the girls made with Amelia and the wonderful veggie and salad sides she prepared.  Eventually we get got the kids into bed while the adults spent a lovely time in front of the fire with a fabulous bottle of wine catching up with some amazing old friends!

Once we got up, and enjoyed another amazing spread of delicious food for breakfast (Amelia’s passion for food never disappoints), we packed up and unfortunately had to say goodbye to Amelia and Ed.  As it was time to hit the road to Scotland.  It was a relatively long drive up, but we made it to Loch Lomond.

After checking into our Pod, we took the dogs and went to find the loch.  It turned into a lovely walk to the Loch Lomond Shores and back again. The walk was really needed to stretch our legs after hours in the car.  The girls of course spent most of the time reading.

Whilst in Scotland we started a routine of spending a couple of hours in the morning to get some schooling done, before enjoying the rest of the day with more fun stuff.    Once we got that done and as we had plenty of time before picking up our camper van, we decided to take the scenic route.  Hence we took the back roads to Stirling.  There we attempted to find a Geocache (no luck) but we did get to see the castle on the hill.

We ended our visit early as the campervan company told us that we can pick ours up way early.  So we hopped back into the car and legged it to Stonehaven.  There it took us a hour to learn all about the van, and to pack our stuff into it.

Eventually we hit the road and slowly drove further north and got to our campsite for our first night, after stopping off and stocking up on food.  Gotta say that the campervan is tiny for 4 people. We took the time in the evening to try to organize things better but we were still tripping over things and each other.  It will take time to get used to it.

We made our first meal in the campervan and celebrated with a glass (or two of wine).
