Early wake up to catch our 8am flight to Kuala Lumpur via Phuket. We really enjoyed Koh Sumai airport, as it was so so different from your typical airport. First of all it embodied the island style, and basically is all open, (very few walls). It felt more like walking through a village than an airport. Even the little buses to the planes were more like extended golf carts!
After a short flight to Phuket on a tubroprop plane, was had a few hours to wait before catching our next flight to Kuala Lumpur. Once we arrived we quickly went through immigration, got our bags and hopped on the train into the city. The express train took us straight into KL Sentral, and when we walked out the station, Mish got a bit of a surprise and found the offices of SBM Offshore, the first company he worked for after graduation, a bit of a blast from the past.
There was a slight detour to a shopping mall to get a data sim card, and some coffee/tea before catching the next set of trains/metro to our hotel.
Quick check in, and out we went to find our food. We seem to have found ourselves in the arabic part of town, with a large number of Arabic restaurants and shops. Hence for dinner we settled on some shawarma. Yum!
On the way back to the hotel, we got exposed to a random fireworks display. The fireworks were quite intense but also very low, not going above the tall buildings. Sort of a nice surprise.
Long travel day, so early bed time, and tomorrow morning we are headed into the jungle…
