Vietnam - 28 April 2023

Today we are leaving Hue to travel to Hoi An.  So after breakfast and a bit of school we got picked up and headed south.  Unfortunately, while the scenery was beautiful, especially going up and down a mountain next to the coast, the girls where feeling very rough and a little green.  The roads where quite bumpy and our driver had a very heavy foot, as he weaved around the traffic.  It was so bad that even Harriette, who as an iron stomach, vomited…

Needless to say we were quite spent once we got to the hotel.  The hotel resort however turned out to be a great place to regain some of our energy.  We checked in and found out that we have our own private  swimming pool right outside our patio door!  Not only that, but the resort has 3 other pools as well.  If you have been reading our blog or know our girls, there was only one thing we could do! Go swimming!  Safe to say we tried out ALL the pools today.

The resort offered local food tasting session, which was a lovely way to get a feel for the food that we can expect here.

This was followed by a sunset boat cruise up the river, which unfortunately was not as spectacular as expected as the sun was hidden by the clouds.

Once we got back, we decided to go into town.  It was a great decision as soon after leaving the hotel we hit the night market and more importantly the night life.  It was buzzing.  Lots of people on the street, lots of stalls and pedlars, live music bands in the street bars.  It was an amazing atmosphere.

There were a two highlights this evening.

1. The hotel is on an islet, and by the bridge there were hundreds of little boats rowing up and down that were lit with lanterns.  In the darkness it looked absolutely gorgeous.

2. Going to Banh Mi Phuong (a Vietnamese baguette restaurant) made famous by Anthony Bourdain, which was definitely worth going to!

It would have been easy to see us spending a few more hours on the streets or in the road side cafes/pubs, but after today's journey the girls were tired and tomorrow we have an 8:15 start at a cooking school! To finish off the evening we had ice-cream before crossing over the bridge back to the resort.
