Japan - 9 April 2023

Woke up relatively early as we wanted to see the Jinya Mae Morning market, after discovering that it snowed last night!!! It was very disappointing, with only about 20 stalls and mostly all selling similar things, fresh and pickled vegetables that none of us could name or guess what they were, and flowers. We did grab some dried apple rings and popped rice (think Rice Krispies, but different) for snacking on.

Then we headed off to do the 5.5km Higashiyama Walking Course. The route took us past many many temples, up a rather steep hill in Shiroyama Park and past the Takayama Castle Ruins. It was a lovely crisp spring morning, with some evidence of last nights snow on some of the temples roofs still. Cherry blossoms in full bloom and a good view of the town sprawled at the base of the hill is visible from the top! Along the trail and later in town we did a good amount of Geocaching in the area, around 10 just today!

Lunch we bought at the supermarket and took it down to a bench by the river for a picnic. Thereafter we took a slow wonder through the ‘old town’ historic shops and Mish tried Hida Beef Nigiri, and all 3 girls bought their own Yukata’s. We of course stopped off for ice cream, before heading back to the Ryokan for school catch up and some down time.

Along the way Maxine's tooth came out, which lead to a discussion on what to do with the tooth and whether the tooth fairy would visit her all the way in Japan (A friend told us that the Japanese kids throw their teeth onto the roof top, not sure how common that is...)

About to head out for dinner, Harriette’s choice tonight and she wants Ramen!
