Travel day today from Nagano to Toyko. Checked out of the Ryokan and headed to the station for bakery breakfast. Bullet Train, Shinkansen, which took 1.5 hours, then local train within Tokyo to get to our AirBnB.
We went for conveyor belt sushi lunch and went to look at the “geek area” of Town, Akihabara, for Mish to look at old school gameboys and IT stuff, and did a bit of tourist shopping.
Then we had the most awesome experience at the Owl cafe. It’s a small space with over 25 owls, and you go visit and get to hold/touch them. We each had a chance with 2 owls.
Maxine held HoneyBee - a White faced Scopes Owl, weighing 230g and born 24/1/2018, a very quiet disposition owl with a cute expressive face. Next she held Sweet Potato - a Spotted Little Owl, 120g and born 15/3/2014. She is one of the most popular owls as she is absurdly cute, but rather frightened of sudden movements. Maxine was amazing with the owls and really enjoyed herself.
Harriette first held Squirrel - a Tropical Screech Owl, weighing 130g and brown 25/3/2015 (he is best friends with Zebra, Robyn’s first owl) He has giant eyes on a tiny body, and was a joy to touch and spend time with. Next up was Almond Caramel - a Little Owl, at 200g and born 14/6/2016. Apparently a devotee of the goddess Athena, vigorous and quick-witted! He was a very expressive little guy.
Mish held Kiwi - a Southern Boobook, weighing 330g born in 2016. He was a very quiet and clam little fellow and fell asleep on Mish’s arm without any problems, though he was a little camera shy. Next he was a roosting post for Wizard - an Albino Barn Owl, a chilled out guy to match Mish’s personality perfectly.
Robyn started off with Zebra - a Chaco Owl, weighing 380g, this was a very active owl who walked up and down my arm and over the shoulder a few times. Enjoyed playing with the collar of my jumper, and was affectionate with ear kisses. My next owl friend was Peanuts - a Mottled Owl, who shares my Birthday, May 18th! He has wide eyes, extremely long eyelashes and a cuddly personality. It was a great experience being so up close with so many owls, and we all had a thoroughly amazing time!
Trains back to lodgings, but with a stop off dinner - a Korean delight with Kimchi, pork roast at the table and lots of amazing sides. We had a bit of an issue with getting into the AirBnB as the door code was incorrect, but it was quickly resolved, and we put the girls to bed. Laundry and daily admin catch up for parents and now its to bed for us too…
Tomorrow the plan it to go to Mt. Fuji for the day.
